PHILADELPHIA — Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement today, which will officially take effect in July. This gives President Trump the opportunity to appoint a second justice to the Supreme Court.
“I would like to congratulate Justice Anthony Kennedy on his much deserved retirement after 30 years of public service on the Supreme Court of the United States.
“As a Republican judge appointed by President Ronald Reagan, Justice Kennedy authored the majority opinion in landmark cases such as Citizens United vs FEC.
“We must now look forward to President Trump being able to cement conservative control of the court for years to come with his second SCOTUS appointment during his first term.
“Remember that obstructionists like Bob Casey voted against his first appointment, Neil Gorsuch, who has consistently defended everyone’s First Amendment rights, especially their religious liberty.
“Let us watch how Casey advises and consents on President Trump’s next Supreme Court appointment and remember that electing Lou Barletta this November will end this type of obstructionism,” said Michael Meehan, Chairman, Republican Party of Philadelphia.
