Birds of a Feather
Philadelphia, PA – The standard rental fee to use the Mayor of Philadelphia’s Reception Room in City Hall is $750 for political groups, unless you are being endorsed by the Philadelphia Democratic machine, and then apparently, the taxpayers foot the bill.
Last December, then-Mayor Michael Nutter, who promised to “throw the bums out” of City Hall when elected, and other prominent Philadelphia Democratic officials took part in a press conference in the Mayor’s Reception Room where they threw their support behind a fellow Democratic machine politician running for U.S. Senate: Katie McGinty.
Unfortunately, McGinty didn’t pony up the room rental fee and unsurprisingly, neither Mayor Nutter, nor any of the other Democratic officials in attendance demanded payment.
“Color me shocked, the Philly Democratic machine did Katie McGinty a favor, at the expense of the taxpayers,” said Philadelphia Republican City Committee Executive Director Joe DeFelice. “We have State Representatives accepting gifts from lobbyists across the restaurant table, politicians taking six-figure incomes and not showing up to work. Nobody’s surprised that Philly Democrats would break the rules for McGinty.” Ethics problems are nothing new to McGinty, who was bogged down by ethics scandals during her tenure as head of Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protections, including a probe that reached the state Supreme Court. Yet, McGinty and these officials continue to abuse taxpayers for their own personal gain. It is disheartening that the Mayor of Philadelphia, and many of his colleagues care so little about ethics that they would host political events on the taxpayer’s dime. And as for McGinty, “birds of a feather…”
