This afternoon Congressman Chaka Fattah become the second member of his immediate family to be convicted of corruption charges, after a jury found him guilty of misusing federal funds and campaign contributions to pad his own wallet.
“Congressman Fattah has made a career of serving himself and his political cronies over the people he claimed to represent” said Joe DeFelice, Chairman of the Philadelphia Republican Party. “The evidence was damning and conclusive, and now there is only one path forward that will help repair the damage done to the people of the 2nd Congressional District: he must resign his seat immediately.”
Fattah also is poised to serve as a super-delegate for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton when the DNC arrives in Philadelphia in July. It’s a match made in heaven for the two: he’s the only current Congressman to also be a convict, and she’s the first major party nominee to be investigated by the FBI. Corruption seems endemic to Philadelphia Democrats, whether it’s Fattah, sitting State Senator Larry Farnese (indicted), or sitting State Representative Vanessa Brown (on trial). Hillary will feel welcome in Philadelphia. They should all feel ashamed.
